Canadian Citizenship
Every year about 150,000 people become Canadian citizens. To become eligible for Canadian citizenship, you must have lived in Canada for at least three years out of the fours years preceding your Canadian citizenship application. It is important to note that you can NOT meet the residency requirements for citizenship without a minimum of 2 years as a permanent resident. For the purpose of calculating the time period for obtaining citizenship, every day one lives in Canada before becoming a permanent resident is deemed to be counted as a half day and for every day one lives in Canada after becoming a permanent resident it is deemed a day.
Canadians do not lose their Canadian citizenship simply because they live overseas for many years.
Canadian citizens can hold dual citizenship.
Currently, a spouse of a Canadian citizen whether legally married or in a common law relationship, does not have an automatic right to Canadian citizenship
A child born outside of Canada after February 14, 1977 to a parent who is a Canadian citizen at the time of his/her birth, is a Canadian citizen. In addition, it should be noted that a child born outside of Canada after February 14, 1977 to a Canadian parent who was also born outside Canada to a Canadian, is able to retain citizenship if executed before the age of 28.
As of 23 December 2007, anyone adopted by a Canadian citizen after February 14, 1977 can apply for a grant of Canadian citizenship without first becoming a permanent resident provided that at least one of the adoptive parents is, or was, a Canadian citizen when the adoption took place; the adoption severs (or severed) all ties with the adopted person's legal parents and the adoption was or will be competed outside Canada (except for Quebec ).
