In the event that one is a permanent resident of New Zealand and intends to continue to reside in New Zealand if granted citizenship, then citizenship will be awarded provided the following conditions have been fulfilled:
(a) in the event that one received his/her permanent residency visa before 21st April 2005 - he/she must have been lawfully resided in New Zealand for the past three years.
(b) in the event that one received his/her permanent residency after 21st April 2005- he/she must have been lawfully residing in New Zealand as a permanent resident for the past five years.
New Zealanders do not lose their citizenship simply because they live overseas for many years.
Currently, a spouse of an New Zealand citizen whether legally married or in a common law relationship, does not have an automatic right to citizenship
The natural child of a parent who is a New Zealand citizen at the time of his/her birth is entitled to receive citizenship " by descent ".
