IMMIGRATION TO UNITED KINGDOM-INTRODUCTION
The United Kingdom is one of the most popular countries that many Israelis seek
immigration visas to. The factors taken into consideration by potential
applicants who seek to immigrate to the United Kingdom include: its proximity to
Israel, English being the official language and a democratic and stable
government.
The United Kingdom is a member of the European Union so any holder of passport
whose nation belongs to the European Union is able to live and work in the
United Kingdom together with their spouse and family. However, if one does not
possess a British or European Union or is not related to a British or European
Union passport holder, then he/she will have to apply for a visa to work, study
or immigrate to the United Kingdom on the basis of their qualifications and
skills or by means of a business visa.
IMMIGRATION TO THE UNITED KINGDOM- SEVERAL OPTIONS
In 2008, the United Kingdom completely overhauled its immigration process
resulting in the most sweeping immigration reforms in the past 45 years. The
immigration process of the United Kingdom is now based on a points system for
the obtaining of certain criteria depending on the type of visa one is applying
for. The reforms that have been made to the immigration process in the United
Kingdom are aimed to attract young, professional experienced individuals and
families to settle, invest, work and establish business in the United Kingdom.
The new immigration system in the United kingdom has five ( 5 ) levels:
The first level- professionally qualified and experienced individuals, business
individuals and entrepreneurs.
The second level- salaried workers who have obtained sponsored employment by a
British entity, for example: teachers, nurses.
The third level- skilled tradesman where there is a temporary shortage in the
British labour market such as construction workers.
The fourth level- students wishing to study in the United Kingdom.
The fifth level- temporary workers, youth and youth mobility scheme such as
musicians and producers.
According to the first level an individual is able to apply for a work visa for
a period of three years with an option to extend the visa for an additional
period on the basis of qualifications and work experience. This visa option
encourages the entry of young skilled professionals who can contribute to the
economy and the development of the United Kingdom. The applicants who receive a
visa in this category are able to after a period of four years, apply for the
Right of Abode (permanent residence) and thereafter British citizenship.
Investors, namely people with means who have the proven financial capacity and
who are interested in the United Kingdom can gain an immigration visa to the
United Kingdom.
WORK AND STUDENT VISAS
One is able to apply for a work visa if one secures employment with a British
national, company or entity who will be their sponsor.
Another option that is very popular is a student visa which allows the holder of
the student visa to study and work ( up to 20 hours per week ) in the United
Kingdom.
SPOUSE AND FAMILY VISAS
One can apply for a spouse visa if they are married to a British citizen and
he/she is over the age of 21. Spouses need to be sponsored by their husband/wife
and prove that he/she will not become a burden on the British welfare
authorities.
