Work Visas
Australia, Canada, Britain, New Zealand and the USA have strict rules in regard to the issuing of short term and long term work visas. It should be noted that a working visa ( short term or long term ) is not an migration visa and therefore the rights and benefits of the visa holder are different to that of a temporary or permanent visa holder.
Short term working visas are granted to an applicant for a limited time and for a limited purpose. There are many short term working visas available. The particular visa that the individual applies for depends on the purpose for which the visa is needed.
Working holiday visas for Australia and New Zealand are available to applicants between the ages of 18-30 who are passport holders of specific countries. A working holiday visa holder may stay and work in Australia or New Zealand for up to twelve months, however the visa holder is restricted to certain types of work for a certain period of time. For more information see working holiday visa in Australia and working holiday visa in New Zealand.
Long term working visas allow the applicant and his/her family to reside and work in a country for up to four years. In most instances, this visa can be renewed for a further four years. This visa is provided on the basis that the applicant will be employed in his profession by a specific employer (the terms and conditions of employment are usually specified in a signed employment agreement between the employer and the applicant). In most cases, the employer is required to "sponsor" the employee.
Many countries that have specific professional skill shortages are willing to grant work visas to an experienced applicant ( 3 or more years of professional work experience ) provided that the employer proves that there is a shortage of local labor in this profession or it is recognized that there is a skill shortages in a particular region. Lists of skilled occupations in demand are published from time to time by different countries- please refer to the individual country you wish to obtain a work visa for.
It should be noted that Britain has recently developed a successful program for highly skilled young professionals that enables an applicant to receive a one year work visa, that can be extended for a further three years, and at the end of a five year period as a highly skilled migrant, the applicant can apply for permanent residence for Great Britain.
It is important to note that many professions require the holder of a work visa to obtain the requisite professional license to enable the applicant to work in that occupation.
