Citizenship and Naturalisation
Australia, Canada, Britain, and New Zealand grant citizenship to its permanent residents upon fulfillment of certain conditions usually proof of actual residence in the particular country for a specified period of time. In some countries the obtaining of citizenship is a merely a formal procedure whereas in other countries one is required to undertake an examination and/or attend a ceremony.
Citizens of Australia, Canada, Britain, and New Zealand are able to "pass citizenship" to their children by means of a process known as citizenship by descent. A USA citizen is able to pass citizenship to her/his children before the child/ren reach the age of 21 provided that the parent was physically present in the USA for a certain number of years. A USA citizen who is a grandparent can also pass citizenship to a grandchild under the age of 21 provided the USA grandparent has resided in the USA for a given period and can prove his/her period of residence in the USA.
Adopted children may acquire citizenship from their adopted parents upon provided proof of adoption.
