Canadian Citizenship

Every year about 150,000 people become Canadian citizens. To become eligible for Canadian citizenship, you must have lived in Canada for at least three years out of the five years preceding your Canadian citizenship application. It is important to note that you can NOT meet the residency requirements for citizenship without a minimum of 2 years as a permanent resident. For the purpose of calculating the time period for obtaining citizenship, every day one lives in Canada before becoming a permanent resident is deemed to be counted as a half day and for every day one lives in Canada after becoming a permanent resident it is deemed a day.

Canadians do not lose their Canadian citizenship simply because they live overseas for many years.

Canadian citizens can hold dual citizenship.

Currently, a spouse of a Canadian citizen whether legally married or in a common law relationship, does not have an automatic right to Canadian citizenship

Canadian citizenship by birth outside Canada to a parent who is a Canadian citizen is now limited to the first generation born outside Canada.
