Australia has become one of the leading destinations for immigration from all over the world. With stunning landscapes, a world renown education system, a sophisticated and highly developed healthcare system and ranking as the world’s 5th highest income per capita, Australia is a great place to immigrate to, study, work, and travel in.

Some 25,000 Israelis currently live in Australia and according to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs many Israelis are due to join them in the near future. According to the Department of Home Affairs, the immigration quota for the 2023-2024 immigration year has been set at 190,000 visas.

IMMIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA- THE POINTS SYSTEM

The points system is a selection process that ranks the skills, professional knowledge, English language skills and the immigrant’s capacity to succeed into being absorbed into Australia.

Different criteria determine the degree of suitability of the applicant and for every qualifying factor points are awarded. Some of the qualifying factors for which points are awarded include: occupation (professional qualifications and experience), knowledge of the English language according to the results of an English language test, age (with a preference for the 25-40 years age group), professional work experience and several other factors. It should be noted that only those candidates that reach the minimum number of points are eligible. Currently an applicant is required to have 65 points in order to be eligible to submit an application for immigration to Australia.

IMMIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA – THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR PROFESSION OR BUSINESS EXPERIENCE

A skilled occupation is the key factor in submitting an application for immigration to Australia. The Australian government publishes a list of professions of which the most preferred are: computer programmers and specialists, architects, builders, teachers, engineers, medical professionals including doctors and nurses, scientists and tradesman.

Applicants whose professions are one of the lists of eligible occupations for immigration (the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List, the Short-term Skilled Occupation List and the Regional Occupation List) need to have the relevant professional documentation to prove their qualifications and experience and such documentation is required to be sent to the relevant authorized professional assessing body in Australia. It is not possible to submit an immigration application without the applicant receiving a positive professional skills assessment from the relevant Australian assessing body.

Australia encourages the immigration of successful business people to establish a business in Australia. Business visa migrants receive a four (4) year temporary visa and if the business visa applicant is commercially successful, he/she will receive permanent status after two/three/four years.

There is also a diverse program to encourage students to study in Australia and for certain occupations to receive professional training and work in Australia.

IMMIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA- ON THE BASIS OF FAMILY

The spouse of an Australian citizen or permanent resident can apply for immigration to Australia. The applicant will receive a temporary visa which after two years (if one is able to prove that his/her relationship to his/her spouse is stable) he/she will receive permanent status. An applicant who has been married to an Australian citizen or permanent resident for a considerable period of time may receive permanent status shortly after receiving temporary status.

There is an immigration program with a number of visa options for parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents. Parents who have the majority of their children living in Australia as permanent residents or citizens are able to apply for a parent immigration visa. However, some of these visas involve a queueing system which means that a visa applicant may wait many years before his/her parent visa is issued.

Children of permanent residents and citizens including adopted or orphaned children under the age of 18 who wish to be brought up by close relatives in Australia, may be eligible to apply for immigration status to Australia.
