Green Card

The US Government holds one American Green Card Lottery each year, and there are a maximum of up to 50,000 winners in each Lottery. Qualified winners and their family members can receive a US Green Card and the right to live and work in the USA.

The annual DV lottery program makes permanent residence visas available to persons meeting the simple, but very strict, eligibility requirements. A computer-generated random lottery drawing chooses selections for the diversity visas. The visas are distributed among six geographic regions with a greater number of visas going to regions with lower rates of immigration, and with no visas going to nationals of countries sending more than 50,000 immigrants to the US over the period of the past 5 years. Within each region, no one country may receive more than 7% of the available Diversity Visas in any one year.

To enter the DV lottery, one must be a native of one of the listed countries and you must have either a high school education or its equivalent which is defined as successful completion of a 12 year course of elementary and secondary education or two years of work experience within the past 5 years in an occupation requiring at least 2 years of training. If you do not meet these requirements, then you should not submit an entry to the DV lottery program.

The Department of State will only accept completed Electronic Diversity Visa Entry Forms submitted electronically to www.dvlottery.state.gov during the registration period.

All entries by an individual will be disqualified if more than ONE entry for that individual is received regardless of who submitted the entry. A husband and a wife can each submit one entry provide that each individually meets the eligibility requirements. If there is an error in your entry, the US Government will disqualify your entry. In a recent Green Card Lottery, the US Government disqualified 2.9 million people for errors in their entries.

If selected from the lottery, you will be notified by mail about six months after the lottery closes by the Kentucky Consular Center and you will then have to follow the instructions specified in the said letter. It should be noted that lottery selection does not automatically guarantee that you will receive a visa. Each month, visas will be issued, visa number availability permitting, to those applicants who are ready for the issuing of visas during that month. Once all the 50,000 DV visas have been issued, the program for the year will end. Selected applicants who wish to receive visas must be prepared to act promptly and submit all of the documentation required precisely and efficiently.
